Abstract

This research examines the representation of interpersonal communication conflicts and communication barriers within the Korean drama Our Beloved Summer. The relationship between the two main characters, Choi-Ung and Yeon-Su, is characterized by a long term interactional impasse triggered by the clash of past emotional wounds. This research aims to uncover how signs of conflict are represented. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach utilizing Charles Sanders Pierce’s semiotic analysis, integrated with concepts of interpersonal communicaton, relational dialectics, and communication barriers. Data sources consist of scenes, nonverbal expressions, and dialogue of Our Beloved Summer that represent interpersonal communication conflicts. The findings indicate that the root of the conflict lies in the clash of two internal psychological barriers, Choi-Ung’s trauma regarding rejaction and Yeon-Su’s feelings of inferiority stemming from poverty. The inability to communicate these wounds creates fatal massage distortions. Consequently, both characters become trapped in a cycle og tension that triggers a recurring negative pattern of conflict avoidance mechanisms. A resolution to the conflict is ultimately achieved through self disclosure that dismantles defensive mechanisms, successfully shifting the process of meaning making from an ego centric perfective to one of transparent, mutual emphaty and acceptance.
